By using many of the strategies and practices that are included in the Built Green Remodeler program, this MBA member completed a Whole House Addition that met the project budget, exceeded the clients expectations, and significantly improved on the industry standard for environmental performance. The new owner purchased this property for the sloping lawn and professional landscaping down to Steilacoom Lake, not for the unaltered, 1957 vintage rambler that sat on it. The task for design/build ...learn more

Snoqualmie Ridge is a master planned community located near Snoqualmie Falls with homes, retail, commercial, golf and custom lots developed by Quadrant Homes in Snoqualmie, Washington. Because of a creative compromise among the Quadrant, King County, the City of Snoqualmie and the Cascade Land Conservancy, more than 4,000 new homes will be built while preserving forested views of one of Washington’s cherished tourist attractions. Sunshine Construction salvaged many of the original structure’s parts to reconstruct this new 1,800-square-foot home and attached 650-square-foot apartment near the University of Washington. The home’s energy-efficient shell features 9-inch-thick double-framed walls, tripled-glazed windows, a solar water collector on the roof and a 1-foot-thick insulated roof. Insulation in the walls is made of recycled newspapers, and the roof insulation is constructed of structural insulated panels (SIPs). ...learn more

In 2006, the Porters decided to transform their ramshackle 100-year-old beachfront house into an energy-efficient, environmentally responsible home that would meet the strictest green home guidelines while providing a beautiful, comfortable living space that would meet their family’s current and future needs. To help others benefit from their experience, they committed to making the project a demonstration home for green design, systems, and materials. They’ll be documenting their options, ...learn more

When Nora and Tien traded-in their single family home in the Renton suburbs for a BUILT GREEN townhouse in Seattle's Beacon Hill neighborhood, they had no idea how much their ecological footprint would shrink. Their new home is one of four units recently developed by Greenleaf Construction on a previously single family lot. The efficient layout of their 1,100 square foot compact home includes three bedrooms and two and a half baths. ...learn more

One of the first environmental choices the owner made was to build small. This resulted in significant resource conservation (both in building the structure and in operating it) and it meant less distrurbance to the site. A small house must be designed right to work well. The architect used several techniques to create a space that works for the owners, including a series of eight skylights, contrasting colors, orientations, degrees of privacy and ceiling hights, built-ins, and rooms with ...learn more

Photovoltaic panels convert the sun's energy to electricity to provide power to this Seattle Built Green home. The rooftop system also includes vacuum tubes for heating water with the sun's energy to provide hot water for domestic use inside the home. Even in the often cloudy western part of Washington, there is enough sun to provide much of the power needs, depending on the size of the system, to a residence. Local utilities have net metering programs that effectively buy any extra power from ...learn more
